SUNDERLAND & District Bowling Association have called a special AGM on January 17.

The Association is proposing to make it compulsory that all clubs must pay the current £8 affiliation fee per member to Bowls England in order to compete in the association’s leagues and competitions.

The £8 fee is currently split between Bowls England (£5) and Bowls Durham (£3) and is used by the various bodies to run and govern the sport.

Currently, all clubs pay the fee but there is no rule within the Sunderland & District rules stating that clubs must pay the fee, however any bowler wishing to compete in national or county competitions run under Bowls England needs to be affiliated.

With many outdoor clubs running on strict budgets, any savings would be welcome, however, unless the Association and local clubs can reach a compromise, the decision taken at the AGM could have far-reaching consequences on the future of outdoor bowls within Sunderland.
