Hylton show their mettle for big fight

HYLTON B squeezed home 3-2 against Steels A to boost their hopes of avoiding the drop in Division One of the Westoe Removals Sunderland Snooker League.

Kev Steadler gave the bottom club a winning start before Steels’ Chris Cowie levelled in the second.

Ed Norton and Chris Watkin took Hylton into a 3-1 lead before an impressive show by Adam Smith and Jim Gales took the pairs for Steels, with Smith the dominant partner, thanks to breaks of 39 and 28.

Leaders Whitburn secured a 4-1 win against a three-man Seaham Knack team. Phil Freeman had a 50 break in his singles, with John Smith (28) and Derek White (34) impressing in the pairs. George Dormand won his singles for Knack.

Hylton A started well against Pennywell Comrades A, winning the first two frames before Joe Turner and Mick Anderson took the next two. Harrop and Leslie won the pairs to give Hylton a 3-2 success.

A fine performance by Pennywell Comrades B produced a surprise 3-2 victory against Green Baize after losing the first two frames to Sean Wilson and Kevin Brown.

Dean Taylor replied in the third, then an exciting fourth frame went to the black before Steve Joice beat Peter Dambrosie 59-53. The recovery was completed as Taylor and Coffee won the pairs for Pennywell.

Mill View B defeated local rivals Avenue 3-2. Gary Moore was at his best in the first frame as he produced stunning play, leaving his opponent chasing shadows.

Norman Brown levelled for Mill View in the second before Mark Fox and John Spruce shared the next two, leaving the match on a pairs cliffhanger.

A tactical frame saw Mark Fox have a scoring burst before Mill View got started. A steady recovery took it to a colour finish before a fluked green helped Mill View to a 57-28 match-winning result.

Mark Bell had a 40 break for Washington Snooker A as they won the first three frames against Woodside A. Martin Johnson took the fourth before Rutland and Bell claimed the pairs for a 4-1 Washington win.

Biddick B faced a Mill View A team devoid of two players due to unforeseen circumstances and won 5-0.

Cheema’s C are still leading Washington Snooker B in the Second Division and a 4-1 against Seaham Cons maintained their six-point advantage.

Robert Cougle had a 24 break for Cons but could not hold on as Steve Thompson won 53-40. Paul Kirsop and Paul Yuk both won their singles and combined in the pairs, with Kirsop having a 63 break.

Washington Union felt the full force of Washington Snooker Club B as they lost all five frames in comprehensive style as the B players played well on the night.

Glendale enjoyed a 5-0 success against Railway, with John Wiseman having breaks of 32 and 27 in winning his singles.

Biddick B edged home 3-2 in a close match against Washington C. Michael Simpson won the first on the colours before Alex Lewins increased the lead on the black in the second. Derek Collins and Bryan Jeffrey levelled in the next two but lost in the pairs as Straughan and Mills won a black ball finish.

Farringdon B could have been force with a settled team – as a 4-1 defeat of Cheema’s A showed their potential. Paul Grant had a 36 break in the first frame before Michael Wolf levelled in the second. Dave Robinson and Ian Douglas took the next two, with Scott and Wrathmall taking the pairs.

Murton Vic outgunned Victory 4-1.

St Gabriel’s lost the first two frames against Murton Officials before Tony Grimes pulled one back in the third. Boyd Banks restored the lead with a hard-fought 62-51 win in the fourth before Grimes and Hagel took the pairs for Saints.

An exciting game between Cheema’s B and Pennywell Comrades C finished with the deciding pairs combination of Cheema and Longstaff pulling back a deficit to win on the black for a 3-2 Cheema’s win.
