Houghton punish Wearmouth in Storey Bowl opener

THE opening salvos in the Storey Bowl League were fired last weekend, with last season’s runners-up Houghton Town opening up with an impressive 104-51 (7-0) win over Wearmouth, writes Richard Mckie.

Roker Park defeated Hylton CW 82-61 (6-1), while Pennywell recorded a good 82-73 (5-2) win at Thompson Park.

The previous evening’s Grindon League fixtures were washed out due to rain.

H This year’s Bowls Durham County finalists will head to Leamington Spa as the Bowls England National Championships have found a new home.

The early-stage local interest involves the draws for District Two and Three.

Singles Draw

District 3: A.Maidment (HCW) v J.Wilson (HW), S.Krimpen (HDL) v B.Henderson snr (ST), K.Armstrong (HWM) v J.McKinney (HDL), B.Poulter (Us) v K.Briscoe (HDL), S.Patterson (HWM) and D.Morgan (HDL) received byes. Ties to be played on Tuesday, June 3.

H The annual Sunderland & District Tour will head to Winchester this season.

The tour runs from July 27 to August 2 and is one of many highlights in the Association’s calendar. Anyone interested in going can contact the Association Secretary Eric Weightman on 0191 5290753.

H South Hylton bowls club are on the look-out for new members. Based at the King George V complex, the former Pyrex club currently competes in four leagues during the week.

H Dawdon Welfare have over recent seasons had to drop out of a few of the S&D leagues due to a drop in members.

Club secretary John Stephenson is trying to organise a few friendly games against any other club in the same predicament. Any club interested can contact John on 0191 5816673.

H Pelton Fell are holding their annual Open Pairs competition on May 25 and 26. The entry fee is £5 with a first prize of £150.

H Around the country, outdoor bowling greens are becoming more and more under threat as developers earmark them as prime building land.

The issue has now been flagged up to the Government’s planning minister Nick Boles, who has pledged to write to every club in the country to help end the growing crisis.

H The search for a new indoor bowls venue returns to the agenda as Sunderland club officials are due to meet council representatives on Wednesday at 4pm. Members will be able to view details via the club website.

H The Durham County Indoor Bowling Association will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday at Houghton Dairy Lane (7.15pm).

H There was some good news for the Durham Indoor Bowling club, who have secured a £50,000 grant from the National Lottery which will be used to replace the current playing surface and instal an insulated suspended ceiling to improve the building’s efficiency and cut energy costs.

AS THE indoor season finally comes to a close, the EIBA have released its Top 100 ranked players list.

The ranking list is based on a player’s performance in the various national competitions, international appearances and British Isle Championships.

Locally, Stanley have five players in the list - Gary Smith 5th, David Bolt 8th, Brian Harris 37th, Stevie Angus 54th and Brett Arkley 67th,

Hartlepool have three players - Glenn Skipp 16th , Paul Hartley 33rd and Vinnie O.Neill 61st. Darlington have two players – Andrew Kirtland 60th and Mark Jones 96th.

HOUGHTON Dairy Lane Bowls club are trying to introduce a new competition called the Coors Invitation, with prize money of £1200 (subject to entries).

The Houghton club have come up with a unique format. On Sunday, July 13, there will be a fours round robin consisting of six groups of four, with the top 12 teams returning on July 20 for a round robin double pairs.

It is restricted to 24 teams and all players must be members of the same club. Teams can be all men, ladies or mixed and the closing date for entries is July 4.
