Houghton Dairy Lane bowl over Pennywell in opener

THE Sunderland and District Leagues are up and running, although the Storey Bowl was virtually washed out on opening day, with only one game taking place.

Houghton, last season’s runners-up, opened their campaign with a 64-53 win at Pennywell.

Last season’s Harold Howey Trophy Division One title was decided on shots difference, and Barnes West End, runners-up last summer, started the way they mean to continue, defeating Houghton Dairy Lane A 34-23.

In Division Two, New Herrington were the only home winners, out of five matches, when they defeated Roker Park B 37-27¾. The pick of the away successes was Grindon Mill’s 33-23 win at Hetton Park.

The Swan Cup gets underway on Wednesday night, with holders Houghton Dairy Lane entertaining Barnes Park, while runners-up Usworth host Roker Park. Silksworth visit Barnes West End, Houghton Town go to Roker Marine and North Biddick host South Hylton in the rest of the Division One programme.
