Heartening win as Derek is Seaham’s £1,000 top rod

SEAHAM’S 46th Annual Open, sponsored by the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO), had a tremendous turnout of 330 anglers who between them caught 125 fish for 181lb.

The winner of the £1,000 first prize, and the David Guy Memorial Trophy, was local angler Derek Russell with a cod of 8.22lb taken on his last cast from the end of Seaham North Pier.

Following the news that his son (who has cerebal palsy) had been accepted for an operation in the USA, Derek Russell is putting all of his prize money towards the £60,000 needed to cover the costs.

Lee Burton was runner-up with a cod of 5.20lb and third place was taken by David Sinclair with a 5.05lb fish.

The heaviest bag pool was also won by Derek Russell with two fish for 9.38lb.

The junior winner was P. Robinson with a 1.03lb codling, while M. Sardag took the women’s title with a 1.06lb codling and S. Smith won the disabled angler prize with a 0.73lb flounder.

The pairs event was won by G. Pert and S. Stephenson with four fish for 10.11lb.

The next big open competition is the 65th South Shields Open on Sunday, November 3 (11am-4pm).

The competition HQ will be the New Crown Hotel on the Coast Road.

The first prize will be £600 for thAe heaviest fish, then £300 for the heaviest bag. The heaviest flatfish prize is £50 and there will be a prize table in excess of £2,000. Tickets will be in tackle shops soon or you can register on the day between 8am and 10.30am.
