Grindon still in pursuit of Biddick in snooker title race

Biddick A and Grindon Social, the top two teams in Division Two of the Westoe Removals Sunderland Snooker League, are still involved in a fierce battle with neither team gaining any advantage this week.

Biddick A met their B team and lost the first frame as Alex Lewis beat Terry Froud, before Graham Smith levelled.

Dave Adamson and Michael Simpson exchanged blows in the third before Simpson claimed the frame.

Ron Turnbull dug deep to win the next frame. He kept his form and with Smith, took the pairs and the match 3-2.

Murton Officials nearly inflicted the first defeat of the season on Grindon.

Mick McLoughlin won the first for Grindon, before Stephen Clementson beat Neil Brigham. Jim Ashcroft restored Murton’s lead, leading to a pairs deciding frame. Taylor and Clementson were leading 35-28 but missed a pink for the game, before McLoughlin and Brigham took the last two colours for a 3-2 result to Grindon.

Washington shared the singles with St Gabriel’s before winning the pairs.

Ross O’Connor took the first frame for Cheemas against the Duck, who went further behind as Lee Campion won the second. Neil Thubron pulled one back in the third and the match was squared as Lee Dixon took the fourth. O’Connor and Cheema took the pairs frame to claim the match.

In the First Division, Mark Anderson had breaks of 33 and 25 as he won the first frame for Pennywell Comrades A against Green Baize. Peter Dambrosie, Craig Kane and Jeff Burn took the next three singles before O’Wellen and Anderson won the pairs for the Comrades.

Washington Snooker had a 4-1 win against Pennywell B with Dean Taylor winning his singles for Pennywell.

Steel B took the first three singles against Mill View B with wins for Tom Feenan, Adam Smith and Anthony Miller.

John Spruce, of Mill View, was behind for most of the frame but came good on the last three colours to register a win. He was unable to repeat his success in the pairs as Feenan and McLaren took the pairs for a 4-1 victory.

Glen Edwards took the first frame for Seaham Knack against the Avenue, before Chris Henderson and Gary Moore responded for the home team. Stephen Henderson levelled before Henderson and Moore produced a high scoring performance to win the pairs and match.

Whitburn started well against Farringdon with Phil Freeman, scoring 98 points in his singles frame. Ian Stewart and Tony Hazard replied by taking the next two, before John Smith took the fourth and joined Freeman in winning the pairs to take the match 3-2.

Steels A are in a relegation position and needed a good result against Mill View A. In a tight game, Steels took a 3-2 result by winning the pairs.

The Woodside team had mixed success with the ‘B’ team, who contined their run of 3-2 results in the match against Hylton B, but the ‘A’ team went down 4-1 to Hylton A.

H Matches this week in the knock-out competition are: Steven Joyce v Tony Hazard at Mill View Club and Dave Adamson v Robin Mitson at Seaham Knack both on Thursday, April 21.
