Golf: Harle, Watson clinch Pairs title for Wearside

Wearside’s Geoffrey Harle and John Watson teamed up to win the Durham County Golf Union’s Winter Members Pairs yesterday.

Harle, a 10-handicapper, and Watson, playing off 16, won on countback with a stableford score of 47 points at South Shields.

Bishop Auckland’s Frank Waterhouse and David Ambrosini were second, with Beamish’s B. Loughlin and Roseberry Grange’s W. Dempsey third.

Chester-le-Street had Terence Watson and G. Caygill in fifth place on 45 points, ahead of Seaham pair Bobby Arthur and George Newton on countback.

Hetton-le-Hill members William Allen and George Wood combined for 44 points in eighth place, just ahead of Washington’s John Scott and Brian Shotton of South Shields.

James Boal and John Boyle of Seaham finished 14th on 43 points, while Terry Forth and Colin Bentham were 23rd. Houghton’s David Freeman and B. Calvert were 20th, with club-mates Ray Garden and K. Purvis 24th.
