SUNDERLAND Excel Youth Bowling Club’s Tom Lovegrove will represent England in next month’s Triple Crown International.

The Wearside youngster came through an arduous selection process to seal his place in the squad to tackle Scotland, Ireland and Wales in Coventry.

Tom earned ranking points at 10 competitions across England to move into the national top 20 for Under-16s, clinching his spot in the Triple Crown trials and impressing at Coventry by finishing third overall, with the top six landing England slots.

Over 16 games on a long day, he produced an average score of 196 – belying the travelling and the hot temperature.

Seven other Excel bowlers took part in the qualification process, which began back in September, having worked hard to achieve a 170 game average.

Kirstie Allison and Megan Johnson both secured places in the Under-18s’ top ranked 20 female bowlers for the second year running to progress to the Triple Crown trials.

However, Kirstie narrowly missed out on an England spot, finishing in seventh position.
