DURHAM University made it four wins on the trot to keep alive their slim hopes of promotion in the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North.

The students saw off Ben Rhydding 3-2 at Maiden Castle to stay five points adrift of leaders Brooklands Poynton, with three games to play, starting at Kendal on Saturday (12.30pm).

Philippa Lewis’s 13th-minute penalty corner was cancelled out by Jodie Bridger early in the second half.

Alice Toynton restored the home lead on 49 minutes, but Rachelle Le Bourdon hauled Ben Rhydding level again before Ellen Paterson pounced for the winner.

Durham’s penultimate match is a potentially crucial visit to second-top Wakefield, who are three points better off.

H Sunderland Broom complete their North League Division Two North East season with a visit to mid-table Newcastle University seconds on Saturday (noon).

The Wearsiders, beaten 5-2 by Newcastle Medics and 5-0 by champions Newcastle in a double header last weekend, are bottom of the table with just one win in 17 matches.

They trail second-bottom Morpeth seconds by two points.
