Durham golfers off mark with derby success

DURHAM secured an impressive first win of the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties Championship season, thumping Northumberland 12-6 at the George Washington club.

Durham led 4-2 from the morning foursomes, helped by three wins and two halves.

Castle Eden’s Stuart Brown teamed up with Chris Handy (South Moor) for a 3&2 success, while Durham City’s Graeme Marchbank and Joe Cowper (Darlington) edged home by one hole.

Wearsider Martin McCririck (South Shields) and John Kennedy of Consett cruised home 5&4, while Washington’s Imran Aziz used home course knowledge to partner Jason McGuire (Heworth) to a half on his County debut.

In the singles, Durham consolidated their dominance, picking up eight wins.

Aziz scored a one-hole success, while McCririck was a good 4&2 victor. Durham’s other triumphs came courtesy of Brown (3&2), Cowper (3&2), McGuire (3&2), Sam Donald (5&3), Tom Smith (3&2) and Kris Rae (one hole).
