Durham County’s Middleton Cup dreams killed off by ruthless Cumbria

Have your say

Durham County A’s hopes of progressing into the Middleton Cup quarter-finals were ended by a strong Cumbria squad at Wigton.

Needing an 18-4 win, Durham put up a spirited performance and, at various stages during the game, were in the lead, however a second-half collapse ended their hopes as Cumbria ran out 121-97 (20-2) winners.

The only winning Durham rink was skipped by Stockton’s Paul Mosley, who impressively beat internationalist Stephen Farish 21-13. Derbyshire defeated Lancashire by 31 shots (20-2) to leapfrog Durham to finish second in the group.

Results (Durham skips first): P Mosley 21 S Farish 13, W Ferry 17 I Gallagher 20, J Mansfield 15 S Airey 23, A Kirtland 10 G Taylor 20, I Riches 20 S Irwin 24, P Smithson 14 B Sherwin 21

There was more disappointment as the Durham County ladies’ hopes of reaching the John’s Trophy quarter-finals were left in tatters following a heavy 45 shot (22-0) defeat against Yorkshire at Shipton.

In a group winner-takes-all fixture, Durham needed an 18-4 win to progress, however it was not to be as all six rinks were beaten.

In the Stella Logan Trophy, Durham County ladies’ B team well beaten 10-1 by group leaders Lancashire at Horden, only Jennie Smith returned a winning card (24-11).

The remaining five rinks were beaten as Lancashire eased to a 28-shot win overall.

The County ladies’ Walker Cup squad progressed with a comfortable 47-27 win over Northumberland at Backworth.

Durham now face Nottinghamshire at York Railway tomorrow.
