ROKER Marine landed the Sunderland and District Burkett Shield for the 25th time with an ultimately comfortable final win over Silksworth at association president Alan Patterson’s home green at Grindon Mill.
Silksworth’s Ian Riches, Mark Higgins and Michael Laydon collected a three on the opening end, but that was the only time they were in the lead as Marine’s Alan Middleton, Bobby Graham and Ray Robinson raced into a 10-3 lead
A Silksworth double on the 10th end got the score back to 11-8 only for Robinson to notch a four on the next end to lead by seven. Silksworth’s comeback hopes were raised as Laydon got back to 15-12, but seven shots over the next four ends saw Robinson secure a 22-13 win – Marine’s ninth Burkett Shield success in the last 11 years, and their 25th since the competition started back in 1927.
* The latter stages of the Silver Jacks tournament take place this week, with the quarter-finals at Roker Park on Tuesday, the semi-finals at North Biddick on Thursday and the final at Grindon Mill on Friday.
