Dickinson a dazzler as Clarion finish series with a flourish

SUNDERLAND Clarion riders gave a strong showing in the final round of the club’s TTR Barnes Chartered Accountants race series, with three top-10 finishes across the day’s two races.

In the first race, a strong Clarion line-up led to a third place for Tony Dickinson, for the second round in a row. The result means that Tony moves up to third category classification of rider.

Slightly further back, Tony Gibson took 10th place to secure more points for Clarion, who also had Chris Wilson, Charles Monchâtre, Matthew Davies, and Paul Alderson in action.

The race itself was similar to the two which proceeded it in the series, with little opportunity for riders to stay away. As the race approached the climax, Giovanni Asoni (Kyklos Edco RT) and Phillip Kennell (EMC) opened a small gap to fight for the victory, which was taken by Asoni.

Behind them, Dickinson led home the pack, with Gibson close behind to round out the top 10.

In the headline race, Alex Bottomley (Velo 29) took the honours from William Brown (Blackhawk Bikes). The strong field saw many riders return to Hetton to try and build on performances from the previous week’s racing.

For Clarion, Michael Sloanes and Iain Beveridge looked to animate proceedings with the duo both finding themselves away in a break at one point. In the end, the sprint saw Beveridge ride home to ninth place, following on from his eighth-place finish in round one.

Beveridge showed his strong form, riding the Cleveland Wheelers 25 mile time trial the following day, taking the handicap victory on the day with a time of 1hr 1min 40sec. His performance also saw him take Clarion’s Dennis Pearsall Memorial Trophy, which he competed against Steve Kerr for.

He will now focus on tonight’s race at Prissick Park in Middlesbrough.
