DEERNESS Gymnastics Academy secured a club record haul of five gold medals and four silvers in the National Development Programme (NDP) trampoline and tumbling finals in Telford.

The Ushaw Moor-based club’s 16 tumblers had to finish in the top two of the regional finals before placing eighth or higher in the semi-finals to qualify for the Telford.

Solomon Cornwell struck gold in the boys’ 9-10 years NDP 1 category, while four girls – Darcey Garbutt (NDP 4, 9-10), Lucia Woodhouse (10-12, NDP 5), Rebecca Temperley (13+, NDP 4) and Jessica Vaughan (13+, NDP 6) – also emerged triumphant for Deerness.

The four silver medallists were Noah Glanville (boys’ 9-10, NDP 1), Ellie Cook (girls’ 9-10, NDP 4), James Richardson (boys’ 9-10, NDP 4) and Olivia McFarlane (girls’ 15+, NDP 5).

Rebecca Dixon just missed out on a medal, coming fourth in the 13+ girls NDP 3, with Melissa Overal, Amy Jeff and Charlotte March all claiming fifth-place fkinishes.

Harry Wharton and Erin Stone both ended sixth in their categories, while Cleo Watson was seventh in hers.

Glen Wharton, Deerness’s head of tumbling, was delighted, saying: “This was a great weekend for our tumblers.

“The overall standard has gone up from last year, so to take this many medals was fantastic and a credit to the gymnasts and coaches.”

The club will hold taster sessions for tumbling and gymnastics over the summer.
