DURHAM could not build on a stunning start as they slipped to a disappointing 12-6 defeat away to Lancashire in the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties Championship on Saturday.

Durham enjoyed a morning to savour at Preston, with four victories in the foursomes.

Boldon’s Gavin Nesbit and Stuart Brown (Castle Eden) edged home by one hole, as did Wearsider Martin McCririck (South Shields) and John Kennedy of Consett.

Eaglescliffe pair Sam Donald and Tom Smith secured a 2&1 success, but the stars of the show were Washington’s Imran Aziz (George Washington) and Darlington’s Aaron McManus, who posted a superb 6&5 victory.

But it was all change in the afternoon singles as Lancashire cruised to nine wins out of 12. Nesbit (3&2) was the sole Durham victor, with Andrew Wilson of Darlington and Kennedy managing halves.

Boldon’s Rhys Thompson succumbed 3&2, while Aziz went down by two holes, McCririck lost 3&1 and Brown was beaten 4&2.
