Broom’s spirit a leveller

Have your say

SUNDERLAND Broom firsts produced a performance full of grit to ensure a share of the spoils with high-flying Chapeltown firsts.

The Ashbrooke club maintained their unbeaten North League Division Two East record at Sandhill View with a thrilling 3-3 draw against the Leeds club, who sit third.

Nick Campbell and Duncan Stevens netted from open play for the Wearsiders, with Mark Wilkinson driving in a penalty stroke, but the visitors had Danny Palmer, Joel Perfitt and Tom Sorsby on target to pick up a point.

Broom are at home again this Saturday, with fifth-top Leeds seconds the visitors (2pm).

Sunderland seconds endured a disappointing 8-1 defeat to Newcastle University fourths in the North East League’s Intermediate 1.

They are at home to Gateshead seconds, who have won four of their six matches so far, at Sandhill View on Saturday (noon).

Sunderland thirds are still awaiting their first win in Intermediate 2 after a close-run 2-1 home loss to Stockton fourths.

Andy Wilkinson finished off a great passing move with captain Chris Vaughan to put the Wearsiders in front, and Sunderland could take great heart from their passing throughout an encouraging all-round display.

Stockton’s keeper made a series of good stops to deny the hosts, who failed to make the most of their many short corners.

Stockton snatched victory when their centre-forward deftly deflected home two shots, bad luck on an impressive back line, with Micky Brown, Janek Prodhajecki, Stewart Douglas and Eric Matters all putting in excellent shifts.

This Saturday, they will be confident of pushing hard for victory when they go to Maiden Castle to take on Durham City thirds (3pm).

City are 10th, one place above Broom, but have picked up seven points to Sunderland’s one.

H Durham University firsts return to action after a week off when they visit Belper in the England Hockey League’s Conference North on Sunday (2pm). Matthew Hodgson’s side sit third, with their Derbyshire hosts fourth.

The students’ second team head to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth firsts on Saturday still seeking a first win in the North League’s Premier Division. Laurie Hill’s bottom-placed side succumbed 6-2 at Deeside Ramblers last week, their fourth defeat in five matches.

H Sunderland Over-40s were given a walkover by scheduled visitors Formby in their national Masters Cup first round tie.

The Wearsiders’ veterans will now meet Huddersfield Dragons at home on November 25 in round two.
