Both Sunderland Senior squads made winning starts to their 2015/16 Inter Club league campaigns this week.
In Group 3, the Sunder land A team defeated Houghton A 4-1 (55-31).
Michael Wright, Ronnie Robson, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham ran out 27-7 winners against David Sim, while Arthur Baker, Barney Walsh, Michael Davis and Billy Ferry defeated Forster Johnson 18-6.
The only Houghton winning rink came from David Wright’s quartet of Mal Baker, Joe Sutherland and Freddie Fletcher, who defeated Pat Collins, Bobby Rollason, Fred Knubley and John Jones 18-10.
In the next round of fixtures, Sunderland entertain the Parks, while Houghton were due to travel to Hebburn, but Hebburn’s centre has now closed leaving Houghton with a bye.
In Group 2, the Sunderland B team also got off to a winning start with a cracking 4-1 (35-32) win over Hartlepool B at Houghton.
Bobby Usher, Peter Thomson (snr), Peter Brickle and Terry Todd proved the match winners with an impressive 16-6 win over A.Ward.
Richie Jobling steered Tony Grimes, Anthony Wood and Frankie Froud to a 12-10 win over M.Pavin, while Billy Robert’s quartet of George Brown, David Gowland and Billy Conway went down 16-7 to J.Ainger.
The B team travel to Darlington in the next round of fixtures.
In Group 4, the Houghton B team enjoyed a 4-1 win at Ferryhill.
The newly formed Premier League road show which features seven of the regions clubs provided a great afternoons bowling as Durham hosted the first set of games.
The concept of the tournament requires each club to host one week of fixtures played over 18 ends, with one triple from each club.
A strong Stanley squad of Brian Harris, Billy Bell and David Webb showed their intentions with an impressive 29-9 win over Great Aycliffe.
Host’s Durham were beaten 20-18 Darlington A, while the Houghton trio of John Doyle, Terry Todd and Peter Harding snatched a 19-19 draw with a last end count of three.
The last fixture saw Darlington B defeat Gateshead 24-15.
The next round of fixtures takes place at Stanley on Thursday, October 22 (12.30pm) and are: Stanley v Darlington A, Great Aycliffe v Gateshead, Durham v Ferryhill, Houghton v Darlington B
Houghton’s Division Two Inter County fixture against Ferryhill has been rearranged to Sunday, November 15.
Stanley held another International event last weekend as England faced Wales in a mixed test match.
A much changed England squad couldn’t repeat last year’s win as Wales ran out 6-5 winners.
Triples: England 1-1 Wales, Pairs: England 1-2 Wales, Singles: England 3-3 Wales.
Following the demise of the World Bowls Series (WSB), the English Indoor Bowling Association (EIBA) has held discussions with Stakeholders and interested groups to establish a sanctioned Club Open Series and Semi-Professional Tournament within a formal structure for the benefit of the Sport.
As discussions continue, the EIBA will continue to support any Open Singles Circuit events that were planned prior to and after the demise of the WSB.
This year’s Houghton Feast Open Singles outdoor competition is played to a conclusion today as the remaining 16 players go head to head.
The final is due to take place around 3.30pm.
