Barnes Park ready to host fours finals

THE first of the summer’s District Two county competition green finals takes place on Tuesday as the fours takes centre stage at Barnes Park.

Whitburn’s Frankie Smith faces Barnes Park’s Tommy Jopling, while county champions Phillip Dixon, Alf Ferguson, Paul Baker and David Bolt take on Sunderland’s Michael Carr.

H Roker Marine, the area’s final representative in the BowlsEngland top club competition, went out with a 3-1 defeat to Dunston.

In the double fours, Marine defeated Harrogate 38-34 and play Nafferton at Stockton tomorrow, while Houghton Dairy will travel to Elm Tree after defeating John Whitehead Park 44-43. The winners of the two ties will meet each other.

In the Champion of Champions event, Silksworth’s David Bolt lost 21-20 to Spennymoor’s David Gibson while Seaham’s Jimmy McAdoo went down 21-9 to Darlington RA’s Keith Burton, Thompson Park’s Dennis Hulley exited 21-17 to Dunston’s Bret Arkley and Houghton Dairy Lane’s Jimmy McKinney was pipped 21-20 by Leadgate’s Gary Robson.

In the Over-60s pairs, Houghton Dairy Lane’s Dave Morgan received a walkover and will face Leadgate’s Brian Reed, who beat Marine’s Bobby Graham 23-12.

Houghton Dairy Lane’s Ken Briscoe eased past Hartlepool’s Harry Dougherty 21-11 and will now travel to face Elm Tree’s Bill Hall.

H There was some local success at the Pelton Fell Open pairs as Peter Thompson and Dan Todner took the honours. The first planned winner takes all (WTA) event planned for last weekend was cancelled due to a lack of entries. Organisers will try again later this month.
