Newton Hall’s Ann Bernard produced a storming run to the quarter-finals of the ladies four at the National Championships in Leamington Spa.
The four-week extravaganza opened with the team finals. The men’s Middleton Cup final saw Devon defeat Cumbria 125-113, while, in the ladies’ John’s Trophy final, Surrey defeated Leicestershire 135-103.
Durham were represented by Ann Bernard in the ladies fours and after negotiating four rounds, the Newton Hall quartet’s dream of a national title was ended at the quarter-final stage, going down 22-16 to Oxfordshire’s Ann Norton.
In the senior pairs, Houghton Dairy Lane’s Joan Rodgerson defeated Maxine Clarkson (Sussex) 22-8 before losing out in the second round 26-3 to Suffolk’s Sally Butcher.
Both Durham hopes in the ladies’ junior singles were defeated in the first round. Sam Pattison lost 21-6, while Jessica Hopkins was pipped 21-19.
The ladies singles started yesterday, with Durham’s hopes lying with Newton Hall’s Ann Bernard and Lyndhurst’s Sandra Hind.
In the two-bowl singles on Wednesday, Sunderland’s Sue Almond faces a first round tie against Oxfordshire’s Carol Gaskins. The following day, Houghton Dairy Lane’s Susan Forster andf Joan Rodgerson begin their pairs campaign with a tie against Somerset’s Kirsty Hembrow.
Darlington RA’s Andrew Kirtland has qualified for the latter stages of the Champions of Champions competition after defeating Gosorth’s Michael Cymber.
Kirtland will also be looking to steer RA into the latter stages of the double fours as they face Nottingham’s Cavaliers BC in the inter-area play-off.
