SUNDERLAND A made a winning start to the defence of their County Seniors title with a 61-39 (5-0) defeat of Hebburn.
Pat Collins, Billy Hearne, John Jones and Tommy Jopling eased to a 24-13 win over P.Strand thanks to counts of five, six and a seven.
Joe Flett, Ronnie Robson, Ray Robinson and Bobby Graham ground out a 20-15 win over Ronnie Richardson, while the remaining quartet of Ted Forster, Hendy Shields, Fred Knubley and Billy Ferry recovered from an early 5-0 deficit to eventually defeat Alan Birrell 17-11.
The next round of games in two week’s time will see the A team entertain Houghton, while the B team open their campaign with a trip to Hartlepool.

H As the indoor season gets into full swing, the loss of the indoor venue at Crowtree has really hit home.
Frustratingly, the actual green is still lying untouched in the leisure centre.
Sunderland club officials held another meeting with council officials this week, but sadly progress is still slow and the lack of a suitable building continues to frustrate club officials.
At the end of the same meeting, it was confirmed that there were no plans to close any outdoor greens.
H The local bowls scene sadly lost two popular characters as Mowbray’s club secretary Bobby Adams and Houghton Dairy Lane stalwart Eric Makepeace both sadly passed away.
THE Jack Clark bowling venue at South Shields hosted an Open Pairs tournament last weekend.
The round robin format eventually saw the England duo of David Bolt and Gary Smith take the honours from Alan Lawton in second and Phil Smithson in third.
H Thompson Park will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, October 8 in the Blue room at the Mill View Social Club from 6.30pm.
Roker Marine will be holding its AGM on Thursday, October 17 at St Andrew’s Church from 7pm.
