They were due to play Newton Aycliffe in tomorrow’s final at Eppleton CW (11am kick-off), after defeating West Auckland 3-0 in the semi final.

In a statement, Durham FA said: “An appeal wasn’t lodged after the semi-final, but earlier this week it was alleged that Whickham had fielded an ineligible player.

“Following investigations, it was proved that Whickham did in fact play an ineligible player and therefore, West Auckland Town have been re-instated and they will now play Newton Aycliffe tomorrow.”

Northern League Second Division side Whickham had been hoping to land the prestigious trophy for only the second time, following their memorable success in 2006.

West’s scheduled league game at Seaham Red Star on Saturday has been postponed as a result of their late call-up to the final.
