Wearside League: McCain and Turton double up as West End cruise to victory at Windscale

Sunderland West End's rip-roaring 5-1 weekend victory over newcomers Windscale lifted them into the top six in the league.

The Ford Quarry men are now the second-top scorers with 10 goals after putting five past the hapless Cumbrians, who have found it difficult during their initial three matches.

It was Windscale, though, who scored first through Sean Pollen, but the Wearsiders roared back and went in level courtesy of George McCain, who converted a Kyle Young centre.

Barry Turton, nodding in a Mark Catcheside cross, gave West End the lead in the second half, and a strong finish was rewarded with three further goals.

Keiron Martin made it three, robbing the keeper and firing home, then he set up McCain for the fourth, finished off with a clinical strike, before Turton struck his second goal of the game after the keepe failed to hold a Callum Hodgson shot.

West End’s victory was the only game to be played in the league.

Ashbrooke Belford House’s fixture at Cleator Moor Celtic was postponed because the Wearsiders encounted transport problems on route.

Now they almost certainly face a midweek trip through to West Cumbria.

Tonight, West End head to Silksworth to take on Ashbrooke Belford House, with a 7.30pm kick-off.

Horden CW entertain Annfield Plain in Hartlepool (6.30pm), Boldon CA host Jarrow and Seaham Red Star Reserves visit South Shields Reserves’ home at Harton and Westoe.
