With the clock running down, Mark Catcheside became the hero as he produced a superb right-foot volley which gave home goalkeeper Jak Wells no chance.

It was the only goal of the night but proved sufficient to consolidate Anth Nelson’s side in third place and they are now only a couple of points adrift of Stockton Town, with the teams having played the same number of games.

Silksworth CW easily saw off visitors Annfield Plain with a 4-1 victory.

Michael Brunning chipped Plain goalkeeper Ross Andrews for the opening goal on six minutes, but two minutes before the break, Liam Dempsey levelled with a long-range effort.

Silksworth had the better of the second half and they took a firm grip on the game with two goals in three minutes from Rob Hall and Liam Gill.

Just before the end, Rhys Brown made it four from close range.

Boldon CA’s home fixture with Stockton Town was postponed.
