Premier League new boys Norwich City, QPR and Swansea have all exceeded expectations in the first half of their topflight campaigns, and the trio are expected to strengthen their squads in January.

QPR have struggled the most so far this season, but with the backing of billionaire owners they have the luxury of being able to afford to splash the cash at a time when new signings come with a premium pricetag.

The Daily Mail reported on Friday that QPR have tabled a £7m bid for Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is backing QPR to make a big impact this January. He said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if QPR went for someone like Darren Bent.

“Villa are a much bigger club, but Bent and QPR could be a good match. He needs to score goals to cement his place in England’s Euro 2012 squad and the Hoops need someone to fire them to safety.”

Swansea have also been linked with English talent in the form of Chelsea teenager Josh McEachran. The midfielder is desperate for a loan move to continue his progress and this week confirmed he has spoken to Stamford Bridge staff about a temporary switch. Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in McEachran.

The Swans boss Brendan Rodgers also hopes to tie up a deal for much-fancied Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly, despite interest from Merseysiders Liverpool and Everton.

Meanwhile Norwich, under the guidance of Paul Lambert, have been typically reluctant to identify the players he wants to the Press. The shrewd Scot has revealed that he has handed the board a list of January transfer targets but does not want to pay over the odds or panic buy.

He said: “We have to box clever with what we’re trying to do. It’s up to the club to try and sort something out.”

Although Norwich fans would like to see another defender, there has been considerable speculation about Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard after it was announced he is available.
