Sunderland Sunday League: Wade and Smith clinch superb cup victory for Wear United

Craig Neal netted for Tavern, but Sam Wade and top bagger Michael Smith guided United home, with keeper Carl Lee starring.

Mill View CIU nearly let their lead slip as they were cruising but let Westmount back in the tie. Stephen Conlin (2) and Jack Oughton had Mill on top, but they sat back and Stephen Dixon’s double ensured a scare for the visitors, who edged home 3-2.

Jonny Roberts and Matty Pallas earned Washington Colliery a 2-1 win over plucky Grange Park.

The Third Division team gave it a good go, but Gary Harding’s goal wasn’t enough to get anything from the game. Shaun Fisk was their star man, with keeper Conor Binney best for Colliery.

Third Division Silksworth Catholic Club proved they can hold their own in a convincing 3-0 defeat of AFC Wearside from the league above.

Dan Pattison was too hot to handle and fired a brace, with Brent Brooke also notching. Keeper Calum Bannan was outstanding.

Hendon Athletic were in fine form as they smashed Millfield Free Gardeners 7-0.

Stalwart Micky Connor, Chris Pearson and Adam Wasey all hit doubles, with Anthony Carter firing his effort into the top corner from 30 yards. Steven Baker shone for Gardeners.

The Cherry Tree’s decent run continued with an 8-1 defeat of The Dolphin.

Liam Middlemas, Carl Longstaff (3), Kieron Pitkin, Cameron Arthurs and David Middlemass all scored, while Karl Hodgson hit Dolphin’s consolation.

The Stella had an easy route through, with a 5-1 win at Ryhope New Railway.

Gavin Teasdale, Kelvin Briggs, Martin Rutter and Matthew Morris had Stella 4-0 up before Robbie Middlebrook responded. An own goal made it five. Rob Russell shone for Stella, while Billy Galey was Railway’s top man.

Unbeaten Victoria Gardens once again made a massive statement in the First Division with a 7-0 hammering of The Lansdowne.

Star man Martin “Gandhi” Hope continued his excellent goalscoring streak, banging in another four goals, taking his tally to 20 in the league so far.

Kevin Humble, Callum Hope and Anth Nixon also netted. Tom Smith expects his Lansdowne team to put this defeat behind them to have a pop at the promotion run-in. Shaun Smith was star man.

Man of the match Jamie Wardle saw Ashbrooke Sports Club run out 3-0 winners over Thorney Close Inn.

Clark Stead, Lewis Gibson and John Hope-Hindmarsh fired past keeper Gary Tansey. David Bage shone for Thorney.

Hotshot Paul Webster was at it again with a clinical double as Jolly Potters beat Board Inn 2-1. Board pulled a goal back when sub Micky Hackett slammed one past Kyle Hourigan, but they then made it hard for themselves after Clarke Sanderson was given his marching orders.

It was men against boys as The Park hammered Wearmouth CW Juniors 12-3 in Division Three.

Top nagger Michael Pattison returned and hit four. Braces from Ryan McCollin, Tony Hodgson and Connor Gales were backed by Phillip Conlon and Josh Johnstone. Chris Hollern (2) and Mark Dickinson replied.

Local hero Tony Ganley was introduced into a dour affair and soon turned on the style to help Millfield Oddies run out 3-0 winners against Penshaw CC.

He set up Paul Maw with his first touch, then picked Maw out with a pinpoint cross for the striker to nod home.

Ganley then beat four men and got into the box only to square the ball to Maw, who completed his hat-trick.
