Sunderland Sunday League: McEwan makes his mark to give Myers cup lift-off

Star man Reece McEwan gave Myers the perfect start with a quickfire brace, followed by a James Baxter goal.

Matty Rose’s great solo strike gave Wearside hope, but Myers took control again and David Whittle, Glenn Lane and Gav Collin secured the win. Richard McCoy was Wearside’s top man.

Hendon Athletic caused a shock after an epic performance to sink First Division Jolly Potters 6-2.

Athletic showed that they meant business early on, with Chris Pearson and Chris Rowntree on target as Potters could not deal with the passing prowess of the Hendonites.

Adam Wasey, a second from Pearson and a strike from Shaun “Gunner” Graham, finishing an excellent flowing move, made it five.

Paul Webster and Gary Baker cut the deficit, but Shaun Conlin struck on his return to the side to see Athletic through.

RCA Grangetown Florists were at their best when they edged a 3-2 win at Premier rivals Farringdon ISL.

Scott Kelly, Chris Thompson and Andy Place earned RCA a spirited win, with keeper Jordan Harkess man of the match. Farringdon were unlucky and had Adam Johnston and Landry Atchom on target, with Luke Page starring.

The Lansdowne gave a good account of themselves before losing 3-2 to Premier outfit SR Dons.

Dons won a tight game when David Hall, John Noble and star man Michael Laws all scored, but Rhys Jukes and Shaun Smith kept Lansdowne in it. They were only denied a leveller by excellent keeping from Dons’ Anthony Clark.

TC Plastics recorded another easy win, 8-2 at Washington Colliery, to make sure of their quarter-final place.

The usual suspects were on target, with Luke Bell (2), Kieron Stokoe (2), Josh Farquhar (2), Jordan Cook and Alan Tench netting.

Jordan Stevens and Keith Burnett replied, with Chris Bell starring for Colliery.

Victoria Gardens needed penalties to get past The Ashbrooke in a thrilling derby.

Callum Hope, Kevin Humble and David “Busta” Paul notched for Gardens in a 3-3 draw, with Adam Walton, Damian Maw and Neal Atkinson replying. Gardens won the shoot-out 4-3 to move into the last eight, with poor Leighton Cooney missing the decisive spot-kick.

Southwick progressed to the third round with a hard-fought 3-1 win over O’Brien Waste Recycling.

Star man Nath Cummings shone throughout, as John Butler earned his goalscoring bonus with a clinical brace and Anth Ross, the Suddick Rossi, made it three. Michael Conlon hit O’Brien’s consolation.

Plucky Stumble Inn bowed out of the Total Sport Challenge Trophy as visitors Farringdon Detached had too much for them.

Star man Carl Burns hit a double to give the Premier side the edge, but Stumble responded well and levelled through Luke Charlton and Rhys Robson.

Farra’s experience came through and the game was won as Willie Crew and captain marvel Chris Bewick both scored. Corey Steel shone for Stumble.

Martin Telfer Carpets heaped more pressure on Mill View CIU with a smash-and-grab 2-1 victory to move away from the Division Two drop zone.

Ian Coverdale and Aidan Hailes scored for Telfer before Phil Hodgson saw red.

Mill View CIU took advantage of the extra man and Joe Lincoln soon scored, but an equaliser eluded them, despite an impressive debut from ex-model Adam Hopps. Steven Trotter starred for Carpets.

Sunderland Railway Club put another nail in the Lakeside coffin, running out easy 9-1 winners.

Brad Timm and Anthony Rogerson both struck twice, backed by star man Dan Callaghan, Gary Tyzack, Anthony Yates, Perri Agnew and Jak Thompson. Aidan Stoker hit Lakeside’s goal, with Kris Keith their top performer.

There were fireworks as The Cherry Tree banged in 14 goals past the hapless Promenade team. Carl Longstaff was in sparkling form, hitting a double hat-trick and Conner Wilson wasn’t far behind, as he notched four goals.

Liam Middlemas and Kieron Pitkin both hit braces, while Paul Muir fired Promenade’s consolation.
