Sunderland prospect Duncan Watmore has been hailed a “great competitor” after an impressive debut for England Under 21s.
The Three Lions fielded a new-look team against the USA as they prepare for next Monday’s opening Euro Qualifier with Norway, with Watmore among 11 debutants in Gareth Southgate’s squad.
And the 21-year-old forward has been hailed by teammate James Wilson, who scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win at Deepdale - thanks to an assist from Watmore.
Wilson, a Manchester United striker, said: “It was great play from him to square and I could tap it in from the right place.
“I’ve seen him score three or four goals now for England and Sunderland and they’ve all been similar, so you’ve got to expect from Duncan.
“He’s a great competitor and footballer though, so it’s good to play alongside him.”
Wilson and Watmore were in the same U20s squad for the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer.
The U21s will now head out to Norway on Sunday, before facing their hosts in a Euro Qualifier in Drammen on Monday evening.
