Sunderland will not be signing Andy Carroll this month despite reports the Black Cats were interested in the former Newcastle United striker.

Carroll has been heavily linked with a move away from West Ham United in the January transfer window.

But the Echo understands he is not among the targets Sam Allardyce is looking to bring in to bolster his attacking options.

Allardyce worked with Carroll at the Hammers last season and there had been reports this week that the pair were set to be reunited with Carroll keen on a move back to his native North East.

But Sunderland won't be shelling out £18million to land Carroll, who has battled with several injury problems in recent seasons, as he is not on their radar.

Carroll would have been reluctant to join the Black Cats anyway, due to his affiliation with the Magpies, the Echo understands.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic insisted a fortnight ago that Carroll would not be going anywhere in the January window after returning to fitness.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for their former striker.

Allardyce is in the market for a new striker this month, with Danny Graham potentially leaving the Stadium of Light, amidst speculation linking him with a move to Championship Blackburn.
