Maguire has enjoyed one of his most productive seasons in the current campaign, with his tally of 19 goals and assists bettered only by Toney.

He enjoyed one of his most consistent spells in Sunderland’s improved run under Phil Parkinson, posing a significant set-piece threat and thriving as one of the inside forwards in a 3-4-3.

Parkinson credited his improvement to a renewed focus on his fitness and conditioning.

“Everybody knows with Chris that he’s always striving for that consistency level, and he’s starting to show that,” Parkinson said.

“If you get yourself in good physical condition, you can keep producing the performances and I’m delighted for him because he’s got his reward in his performances.

“Now, the challenge for him is not to pat himself on the back too much - because we certainly won’t be giving him too much praise because I believe he’s got the ability to push on again.”

Maguire is one of a number of Sunderland players out of contract at the end of June, and has already stated his desire to earn a new deal at the club.

“I want to stay here for as long as I can, so it is up to me to prove to people I deserve the right to be here,” he said.

“This is a great club and I have enjoyed every moment that I have been here.”
