Sunderland reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after Sam Allardyce’s opening game in charge ended in defeat at West Brom.

Costel Pantilimon: Whether he was fouled or not (and he was) the giant Romanian should still have claimed that cross. 5

DEANDRE YEDLIN: Neutered McClean effectively and got forwards well during the first half, despite suffering from jet-lag. 7

John O’Shea: Helped to limit West Brom to just one effort on goal. 7

Younes Kaboul: Looked much calmer and completely kept Rondon under wraps. 7

Billy Jones: Despite being out of position, is solid at left-back and came closest for Sunderland. 7

Lee Cattermole: Asked to play a touch further forwards, but helped to prevent the Baggies building any momentum. 7

Yann M’Vila: Passing in the second half was wayward when Sunderland had a chance to break. 6

Jordi Gomez: Helped Sunderland to keep possession in the first half, but didn’t really inject any attacking threat. 6

Seb Larsson: Typically dogged performance on the right, albeit make-shift left-back Brunt wasn’t necessarily worried. 5

Fabio Borini: Has to start influencing games more than just tracking back. 5

Steven Fletcher: Had a half-chance early on, but other than that, was reduced to playing with his back to goal 6

Adam Johnson (for Larsson 61): Crossing was poor in dying stages. 5

Jermain Defoe (for Gomez 71): Mopped up by the Baggies defence. 5

Danny Graham (for Fletcher 75): Touch was poor. 5
