DUNCAN Watmore reinforced his case for first team involvement after grabbing the winner for Sunderland Under-21s in a 1-0 win at Spurs tonight.

Watmore continued his impressive run of form with his fourth goal in four games after his second half strike proved sufficient for Robbie Stockdale’s side.

After being an unused substitute for Dick Advocaat’s opening game in charge at West Ham, Watmore hasn’t been involved in the first team picture since, with U21 team mates George Honeyman and Liam Agnew surprisingly preferred on the bench at Stoke on Saturday.

However, Watmore pushed his claims at Spurs when he converted Honeyman’s through-ball just three minutes into the second half.

That followed a dominant opening 45 minutes from Sunderland, when right-back Andrew Cartwright came closest to finding the net with a volley saved by Spurs keeper Luke McGee.

Sunderland stopper Jordan Pickford had to make a couple of smart saves to preserve the Black Cats’ advantage after the break - denying Joshua Onomah and then Shayon Harrison.

But Sunderland substitute Rees Greenwood almost doubled the winning margin when he rounded McGee, only to see his effort cleared by Christian Maghoma.
