Watford striker opens up on Sunderland move, promotion hopes and how Jack Ross has impressed

The 21-year-old has joined on a season-long loan from Premier League Watford, who have an option to recall him in January as part of the deal.

For Sinclair, the chance to play regularly and for a club the size of Sunderland was too good an opportunity to turn down.

The ex-Liverpool youth product, who joined Watford for £4million two years ago, has struggled to nail a regular spot at Vicarage Road but arrives having played an active part in pre-season under Javi Gracia.

He believes the Black Cats will be a force to be reckoned with in League One and is looking forward to playing his part.

“When I got the opportunity to play for a club like this, you can see it is a top, top club - Sunderland is a Premier League club,” said Sinclair.

“For me to come here and play and get a lot of game time is something that I really need and if I can help get this team back to where it is supposed to be, then it will be a big bonus.

“A week and a half ago my agent and Watford came to me and said there was an opportunity to come to Sunderland, I jumped at the chance.

“I know I need to play games this season and it was a no-brainer to sign.”

The Birmingham-born forward has been impressed with the style of football Sunderland are playing in Jack Ross’ new-look attacking 4-3-3 system.

“You can see there is a clear way of thinking, a clear style of play that the manager wants to implement,” he added.

“It will suit me, the way I play. I am really excited to get going here.

“It is a young squad, I was impressed with the lads against Middlesbrough and you can see them working hard in training.

“I haven’t played in League One before but from what I have seen of it - and the players we have at the club - we will be a force this season.

“Not to speak too soon, we need to hit the ground running over the next few weeks and get some results, but I am confident we will do well.”

The pacy forward, comfortable out wide or through the middle, made his debut in Friday night’s friendly against Middlesbrough, the game abandoned at half-time.

“That was definitely the first time I’ve played in a game that has been called of at half-time due to the weather, a nice little welcome to the North East!

“I was definitely buzzing to be out there with the lads and get the first 45 minutes out the way. I would have liked more minutes in the tank but obviously it wasn’t to be!

“I’ll get into training next week and get ready for the start of the league campaign.

“I have only had one training session so didn’t really get chance to see too much but I was really impressed with the lads against Middlesbrough.

“Against a good Championship team in Boro - they will be a top Championship team next season - we really held our own.”

Sinclair almost scored on his first start, his low effort saved by the legs of Darren Randolph before his debut was cut short by the weather.

He is targeting a start when the action gets underway for real with the visit of Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

“We’ll see. We have a solid week of training I need to impress in. If I can do that then hopefully I will get a start.”

And where does he see his best position?

“I try to be flexible, I don’t want to nail myself down to one position. Just wherever I can be effective and help the team, that’s where I’ll be.

“I haven’t really set myself any targets, as long as I am playing and helping the team then I will be happy.”

Fans will be happy if he can play a part in winning an immediate promotion.
