Sunderland have been linked with a move for former Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzman after reports in Italy that the Black Cats have approached Napoli for the Dutch international.

Midfielder de Guzman had been on the verge of joining French side Marseille after being limited to a bit-part role with Napoli since joining the Serie A outfit last summer.

But widespread reports in Italy today have indicated that Sunderland have made a move to hijack de Guzman’s switch to Ligue 1 after holding talks over a loan move, with a view to a permanent switch next summer.

De Guzman is reportedly more tempted by the proposition of returning to the Premier League than heading to France, after spending two years on loan at Swansea from Villarreal.

The 27-year-old started 59 Premier League games during his time at the Liberty Stadium, netting nine goals - including a spectacular strike against Sunderland in Gus Poyet’s first game in charge back in October 2013.

Crucially, de Guzman would fulfil the remit of an attacking midfielder, which Dick Advocaat has been desperate to add to his squad all summer.

Advocaat thought he had filled that void when Sunderland agreed a loan deal for QPR’s Leroy Fer, only for the proposed switch to fall through due to a failed medical.
