The bleak Sunderland prospects of Santiago Vergini and Charis Mavrias have been reinforced after the pair turned out for the Under-21s in their opening pre-season encounter.
Neither defender Vergini or winger Mavrias are part of Dick Advocaat’s Sunderland plans, with the duo absent from the squad which has travelled to North America for the Black Cats’ pre-season tour.
Mavrias is heading to the exit door after spending the second half of last season on loan at boyhood club Panathinaikos
The pair are working with the U21s until they can secure moves away from the Stadium of Light and they both featured during the first half in Saturday’s 5-1 friendly victory over Tow Law Town.
As reported last week, Advocaat has made it crystal clear that Vergini must find a new club, despite the Argentine international now being formally Sunderland’s player after last season’s loan switch was automatically converted into a permanent deal.
Vergini’s agent has been on Wearside for talks, with Sunderland eager to offload the defender, who ex-head coach Gus Poyet was desperate to bring back to the club last summer.
Similarly Mavrias is heading to the exit door after spending the second half of last season on loan at boyhood club Panathinaikos.
The Greek side want to keep Mavrias on a permanent basis and have been in talks with Sunderland over a fee for the 21-year-old, who is in the final 12 months of his Black Cats contract.
However, Panathinaikos are operating on a limited budget and want to pay for the move in instalments, depending on their progress in European competitions.
Meanwhile, striker Mikael Mandron hit four in the U21s ‘win over Tow Law, with the 20-year-old netting a first-half hat-trick before grabbing another on the hour mark.
Winger Rees Greenwood scored Sunderland’s fifth, with Robbie Stockdale’s side now preparing for Tuesday night’s trip to Consett.
