Given the disjointed summer as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the transfer window would usually be in full swing but this year it was delayed until the football season was completed in the top flight and EFL.

It opened today and will close on October 5.

That gives Premier League and clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two 10 weeks to sign players.

In addition to the 10-week window, the Premier League and EFL have stated that there will be an additional ‘domestic-only’ window between October 5 and 16.

During the domestic window, Premier League clubs will only be able to trade with EFL teams.

The Sunderland squad hasn’t played since March, when football was suspended, having finished the season outside the play-off places when the final table was calculated using a points-per-game ratio.

Phil Parkinson has confirmed the Sunderland squad will return to training on Wednesday at the Academy of Light ahead of the new season getting underway on September 12.

That gives Parkinson six-and-a-half-weeks to get his squad up to speed ahead of the new campaign.

League One will be a fiercely competitive division once again next season with the likes of Hull City, Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic – subject to their appeal against the 12-point deduction – all relegated from the Championship.
