SUNDERLAND are one of several Premier League clubs who have been credited with an interest in Stoke City’s Glenn Whelan.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder is out-of-contract in the summer and talks over extending that deal have reportedly stalled.
Reports in Ireland today have linked Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Swansea with a possible move for Whelan in January, should the Potters allow the 30-year-old to leave rather than losing him for nothing in the summer.
But with Sunderland well-served for combative, hard-working central midfielders, the Black Cats’ priorities clearly lie elsewhere in the upcoming window.
Gus Poyet has made no secret that he wants to add to Sunderland’s attacking options, with the Wearsiders averaging less than a goal per game this season.
