GUS Poyet is believed to be chasing a third Argentinian signing in quick succession with the Black Cats linked with international midfielder Ever Banega.

The Sunderland head coach has already signed Argentine centre-half Santiago Vergini and his countryman, goalkeeper Oscar Ustari in the last few days.

And 25-year-old Banega, who has 24 senior caps for his country, will be following in their footsteps soon, if the claims prove true.

Poyet has insisted he is looking at bringing in British players as well as foreign ones in the current transfer window and has been strongly linked with Brighton midfielders Liam Bridcutt and Will Hussey.

The Uruguayan has also said he is reluctant to get too many foreign players of the same nationality into the club.

But the opportunity to sign Banega might be too good for Poyet to pass up.

The Valencia midfielder is a playmaker known for his ball skills, dribbling and passing and would certainly fit into Poyet’s vision of the type of football he wants Sunderland to play.

Banega was linked with a move to Everton several seasons ago after helping the La Liga side qualify for the Champions League but there were reportedly visa problems.

The midfielder spent a long time on the sidelines through a combination of injuries in the wake of Everton’s interest.

But he has made 19 appearances and scored one goal for Valencia this season and has long since proven his fitness.

He originally joined Valencia from Boca Juniors in 2008 in a five-and-a-half year deal for a reported transfer fee of 20m euros.
