Liverpool are eager to shift ex-Sunderland transfer target Fabio Borini this summer.
Reports today have indicated that Borini is among three strikers Liverpool are looking to offload during the close season, along with Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert.
Sunderland had a £14million move accepted by Liverpool for Borini 12 months ago after the Italian had netted 10 times during his season-long loan stint at the Stadium of Light.
But Borini rejected Sunderland’s overtures; preferring instead to fight for his place at Liverpool, with then head coach Gus Poyet doggedly allowing the saga to run throughout the whole summer.
Borini has started just five times for Liverpool this season though and with another two years to run on his contract at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers’ side remain keen to cash in.
However, Sunderland are unlikely to revive their interest in Borini after the 24-year-old immediately told Black Cats sporting director Lee Congerton last summer that he wanted to stay on Merseyside.
It would have needed Sunderland to offer an astronomical deal - in the region of £90,000 a week - to persuade Borini to return to the Stadium of Light.
There was no fresh move for Borini from Sunderland in the January transfer window, despite his lack of game-time at Liverpool.
A return to Italy looks Borini’s likeliest exit destination, with Fiorentina and Inter Milan both linked with the frontman this season.
