Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher would need to take a huge pay drop if he is to join Celtic, according to reports north of the border.
Fletcher could be sold by the Black Cats this summer, with only a year remaining on the Scotland international’s contract at the Stadium of Light.
Celtic have been admirers of Fletcher ever since his days at Hibernian and have made enquiries about the 28-year-old’s availability.
But reports in Scotland suggest Celtic would only be able to offer Fletcher a maximum £25,000-a-week deal, which is significantly less than he earns at Sunderland.
Fletcher would have no choice than to accept a much lower salary to join the SPL champions, which puts any potential move in jeopardy.
However, there has been previous interest in Fletcher from other Premier League clubs, while the £12million frontman may still have a Sunderland future under Dick Advocaat.
Fletcher started four of Advocaat’s nine games in charge last season, and only lost his place after an ankle injury.
