SUNDERLAND have made a last ditch loan bid for Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner.

The move comes after Peter Crouch moved close to joining Stoke City, which left manager Steve Bruce to turn his attention to the Danish forward.

Earlier today it looked like Bendtner would to be heading to the Britannia Stadium but it was rumoured that personal terms could not be agreed.

Bruce has made no secret of his desire to sign a striker after the Black Cats scored only one goal in their opening four games.

If he does sign before the deadline it would be the second time Bruce has worked with Bendtner, who was at loan with him at Birmingham, scoring 11 goals in 38 Blues appearances.

Since he was signed from FC Copenhagen by Arsene Wenger in 2004, the Dane has only made 40 starting appearances - plus 59 as a substitute - scoring 22 Premier League goals.
