SUPER KEV D-DAY: Sunderland fans will know on Monday whether or not Kevin Phillips will be returning to the club.

The Black Cats have had a long-standing interest in the player since Niall Quinn announced his intention of taking over the club at the end of last season.

Martin O’Neill has now taken over at Aston Villa and has spent the last week assessing his squad.

O’Neill rates Phillips as a player but he also said that he does not want to keep anyone who does not want to stay at the club.

DELAP DESPERATE TO GET SUNDERLAND UP AND RUNNING: Rory Delap is calling on Sunderland to finish their first week back in the Championship on a high with a morale-boosting win over Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.

He told the Echo: “We haven’t had the start we wanted. This games (two defeats) are past and gone now and we’ve got focus on the game against Plymouth.”

RIERA POISED FOR DEBUT CHANCE: Sunderland hope to have new signing Arnau Riera available for tomorrow’s visit to Plymouth.

The Spaniard has penned a three-year deal and is now just waiting for international clearance to come through in time.
