Sunderland's trip to Shrewsbury Town in doubt as Lee Johnson waits on test results amid Covid-19 outbreak

Sunderland had one positive test on Tuesday, forcing seven others to self-isolate, with two of those displaying symptoms. A total of eight players missed the 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon.

The Black Cats could have opted to postpone the game, as Bristol Rovers did today following an outbreak of their own.

However, they were told that doing so would lead to an EFL investigation, and a potential sanction.

The club is now waiting on further test results and there is the possibility the training ground may have to close as well.

At the very least Sunderland would be without those players self isolating for the next 10 days which would rule them out of the Shrewsbury game plus the home game against Blackpool next Tuesday.

Speaking last night, Johnson said his preference would now be test everyone at the club.

The EFL have not demanded mandatory testing in the lower leagues this season, which did happen when the Championship returned to action in the summer.

"I don't know 100% [what happens to Saturday's game]", Johnson said.

"My guess would be the six or seven [self-isolating], they've been tested so it will depend on that in the first sense.

"Beyond that, I think it's wise to probably test anyone but I'm not a doctor.

"Then we'll have to see.

"No one is hiding from performing in matches, but it's got to be safe for both teams."

The club has a busy festive period coming up with six games in 18 days.
