Nuno Espirito Santo's side are now interested in signing the young Swede, according to the Daily Star.

Asoro has already been linked with a raft of top tier clubs, including fierce rivals Newcastle United.

He is one of four young talents whose contracts expire next summer, which is likely to present an early dilemma to Stewart Donald and his consortium should they assume control of the club as expected.

Asoro, Josh Maja, George Honeyman and Lynden Gooch all have just one year left on their deals, with Honeyman another being tracked by a number of clubs.

Asoro and Maja were offered new deals by Chris Coleman and chief executive Martin Bain, with the former urging the pair to commit their short-term futures to the club shortly before his departure.

He said: "It’s definitely the right place for them. They’ve had a taste of it now, so they don’t want to go somewhere else and get lost in the system.

“They want to stay with us and develop, but they haven’t signed a contract yet.

“I think we just need to get back around the table and have a chat with them. You know what football is like, with young players you don’t know who is in their ears and what they’re filling their heads with.

“They’ve got a good chance with us, they really have, and I’m pretty optimistic they’re going to stay with us.”

Asoro was named as the Sunderland Supporters Association young player of the year for the 2017/18 season after scoring three goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.
