Steven Pienaar remains on trial at Sunderland - but the club won't be signing Charles N'Zogbia.
N'Zogbia has been on trial since the start of pre-season but David Moyes won't be adding him to his squad on a permanent basis.
The midfielder made just two appearances for relegated Aston Villa last season as he wound down the final months of his estimated £50,000-a-week wages at Villa Park.
He failed to do enough during his pre-season friendly appearances to win a deal at the Stadium of Light.
Assistant manager Paul Bracewell confirmed N'Zogbia won't be joining Sunderland but said former Everton midfielder Pienaar remains on trial.
He didn't travel to Austria for the draw with Borussia Dortmund but is expected to train with the squad at the Academy of Light next week.
Bracewell added: "Charles isn’t with us any more, he has gone.
"Steven came in at the latter end of the week and he stayed behind to work with the fitness coaches, so we need to catch up with the rest of the staff on Monday to see how he is."
Moyes didn't speak to the press after last night's 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund, instead leaving Bracewell to face the media.
Bracewell moved to reassure fans there is a "lot of activity going on in the background" ahead of the £8million deal for ex-Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji being confirmed late last night.
