One of the key positives of Johnson's tenure so far has been the form of Jack Diamond, whose enterprising displays on the right wing have quickly made him an integral part of the new head coach's plans.

Improving the pathway from the academy to the first team is a key remit not just for Johnson, but for new Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman.

Speakman's work at Birmingham City in bringing through the likes of Jude Bellingham was central to his appointment on Wearside.

Young goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is one of the youngsters to make a strong early impression on Johnson, and is one potential candidate for a loan move in January.

The plan had initially been to send Patterson out to gain first-team experience in the summer, and Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical have been linked with a move next month.

Dan Neil is another player who has made a significant impression on staff since the summer, starring in the pre-season campaign.

Johnson says that moving forward, the example of Diamond's role in a National League promotion for Harrogate Town last season could be key.

"I think we've got to nurture our young players, there's talent there, no doubt," Johnson told the club #SAFCUnfiltered podcast.

"We've got to select the right loans programme as well because I think it's a fine balance for a Category One academy at Sunderland, having been a little bit downtrodden in recent years in terms of good players we've lost.

"There's some great people in there working very hard for the cause.

"We've got to instil some belief, show the pathway to the first team and make sure that players understand that it's not a free ticket by any means, but if you're good enough, we will plan to get you through.

"Sometimes that means getting senior experience, like Jack Diamond last year at Harrogate, who has now stepped up and is doing well."
