1) History:

This will be the 155th meeting between the teams. Sunderland have won 52 so far, with Newcastle coming out on top 53 times.

2) Second time lucky?

Sam Allardyce’s second game in charge of Sunderland will be the derby, as was the case for Di Canio, Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat.

3) Top scorer:

George Holley is SAFC’s top scorer in the fixture, with 15 goals, while NUFC’s Jackie Milburn is their top marksman, with 11.

4) Doubling up:

Last season Sunderland secured their seventh home and away double against Newcastle, and second in a row. NUFC achieved the feat nine times.

5) Record breakers:

SAFC are looking for their sixth successive win against NUFC and an eighth game unbeaten. They have never won six in a row.

6) Goals galore!

Sunderland have scored 228 goals against Newcastle, just four more than their rivals’ 223 in what has historically been a tight fixture.
