DUNCAN Watmore will be assessed today after limping off in Sunderland’s opening game in the Under-21 Premier League International Cup.
Watmore was forced off midway through the first half of Sunderland’s 0-0 draw against Villarreal at the Stadium of Light last night after a fierce challenge left him with calf and ankle damage.
Without the services of the in-form winger – who had scored four times in his previous four games – Sunderland struggled to create clear-cut chances against the Spanish outfit, who were denied at the other end by several smart stops from Vito Mannone.
Watmore, himself, didn’t think his injury was serious afterwards, but he will undergo treatment from Sunderland’s medical team today.
Development coach Robbie Stockdale said: “We’ll assess him today. Typical Duncan, he’s saying he’s not too bad.
“We’ll have to look at it. I think it’s bruising as much as anything. Hopefully it’s okay.
“He adds something different to any team he plays in – pace, power and stretches team in behind.
“Technically, he’s getting better too, so of course you’re going to miss someone like that.”
