SUNDERLAND’S Under-21s succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Celtic yesterday.

The hosts grabbed the only goal of the game just before the half-hour mark in Glasgow and despite John Egan, Adam Mitchell and Wade Joyce all going close, Kevin Ball’s men were unable to find a leveller.

Ball said: “It was a very competitive game. Celtic kept the ball better than us in the final third and we needed to be more assertive.

“We started very slowly but grew into the game and created some decent chances.”

After winning 1-0 at Stoke last week, Ball’s side are not in competitive action again until they host Aston Villa on November 1.

SUNDERLAND: Pickford, Marrs (Gorrin), Adams, Reed (Joyce), Egan, Ferguson, Mitchell, Armstrong (Oliver), Laidler, Lynch, Trialist (Deacon). Subs not used: Dixon, Trialist.
