WIGAN midfielder Jordi Gomez has become Sunderland’s second signing in the space of 48 hours.

The Barcelona-born 29-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats after allowing his contract at the DW Stadium to run down.

And Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet will be delighted to get in a ball-playing midfielder who also shares his fair share of goals.

Gomez started his career in Barcelona’s youth team before making the short move across the Catalan city to Espanyol in 2007.

He spent two years there but his career did not really take off until he moved to Swansea on loan in 2008, where he made 38 league starts and scored 12 goals.

He joined Wigan in 209 and scored 17 goals in 83 league starts. He helped the Latics win the FA Cup in 2013.

Gomez’s last season with Wigan was spent in the Sky Bet Championship and his 11-goal contribution from midfield culminated in him winning the club’s player of the year award for the 2013-14 season.

The 29-year-old joins West Brom defender Billy Jones in moving to the Stadium of Light this week and, like Jones, the Spaniard is a Bosman free-signing.
