Sunderland sign ex-Premier League academy striker to bolster their under-23 ranks

Sunderland have added former Burnley striker Will Harris to their under-23 ranks - as they continue to bolster their second string squad.

The South Shields-born youngster becomes the fifth signing of a busy summer for the under-23 side who have already added Vinnie Steels, Sam Wilding, Bobby Beaumont and Kenton Richardson to their number.

Harris spent time on trial with the Black Cats prior to lockdown and was a key target for Elliott Dickman this summer – with the manager having been impressed with the displays of the former Burnley man.

"We’re really pleased to get this deal done, “ said Dickman, speaking to safc.com.

"We had Will on trial before lockdown and we liked what we saw. He has attributes that should really benefit us this season and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

Harris, who has signed a one-year deal at the Academy of Light, added: B”eing a local lad, it’s a dream come true to sign a contract with Sunderland.

"I’m delighted to be here, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Harris has previously taken in loan spells with Colne and Warrington Town giving him vital experience of senior football.

The young Black Cats are set to add further numbers to their ranks in the coming weeks having seen a large number of last season’s squad depart following the curtailment of the Premier League 2 season after its initial suspension in March.
